Position Data: Engineering Technician I-J23-U14-H

Regular: Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime)

Overview: Pay Range: $23.52 - $29.83 per hour (AFSCME 2264 Engineering Pay Plan, ENG22 Step 1-13)
Hiring Range: $23.52 - $24.96 per hour (AFSCME 2264 Engineering Pay Plan, ENG22 Step 1-4 DOQ)

There is one Engineering Technician I opening with the Yakima County Roads Department - Survey/Construction Division. This position responsible for performing advanced technical and physical field survey tasks as directed by the Survey Crew Party Chief.

Note: This is an AFSCME 2264 Bargaining Unit Position.

This recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies that occur within 90 days of the closing of this position. (This excludes Yakima County Sheriff's Office and Department of Corrections)

Essential Duties:
Applies technical surveying knowledge and techniques in collection of field survey and topographic data, operating survey instruments such as theodolites, levels, electronic distance measuring devices, level rods, back sights, survey chains and GPS receivers.
Operates survey instruments for construction staking on various road, bridge and other construction projects.
Performs field calculations of vertical and horizontal data. Records data into field books and staking sheets. Downloads data collectors into office computer and process line work to check data collected.
Verifies that the appropriate instruments, tools, and supplies are available and in sufficient quantities for the task involved.

Education & Experience:
High School Diploma (or G.E.D.) AND two (2) years of related experience performing road construction/maintenance or completion of engineering course work or the equivalent education and experience to perform the essential duties of the job; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Required:
• valid WA State Driver’s License and proof of insurance, if requested; and,
• successful completion of a general employment verification.

Preferred:
• Associates degree in Engineering Technology or related field.

Equipment Used: computer, calculator, theodolite, level, level rod, survey chain, GPS receiver, electronic data collector, sledge hammer to drive hubs and stakes, cell phone, copier, and a vehicle.

Working Conditions: This position is rates as Heavy Work: Exerting up to or in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is performed out in the field.

Environment: excessive noise, exposure to weather, extreme temperatures, moving/mechanical parts, travel, multiple work locations, field work, and working traffic.

Physical Demands: bending, carrying, handling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, balancing, climbing, couching, kneeling, hearing, talking, visual acuity, and, repetitive motions.

Intellectual Demands: ability to multitask, ability to work under pressure, ability to articulate and communicate information in conversations, ability to follow written instruction. and ability to follow verbal instruction.

Knowledge:
• mathematical computations;
• materials used in engineering projects;
• road design principles and standards;
• Survey Theory and principles;
• customer service techniques; and,
• operation and maintenance procedures for equipment used.

Skills (and abilities):
• basic drafting layout;
• reading maps/Reading engineering plans and interpreting engineering drawings;
• applying surveying techniques and practices;
• communication, both oral and written, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction; and,
• using computers and engineering software applications
