The City of Tacoma, Public Works Department, is recruiting for the position of Chief Surveyor, Assistant. Assistant Chief Surveyors manage and coordinate the daily operations of land survey field crews and to assist the City Surveyor with daily operations.

This recruitment will establish a list that will be used to fill one immediate vacancy and will also be used to fill any vacancies that occur for approximately one year.

Under the direction of the Chief Surveyor, this position will:
Assist with reviewing, coordinating and directing the daily activities of survey crews
Assist in the training and safety of the survey crews
Monitor work progress and time spent on assignments
Assist in coordinating surveying activities with contractors and engineers
Review field notes and implementing the data and as needed
Participate in the field work of a survey field crew preparing surveys for engineering design, construction, and property boundaries.
Review Land Use applications for City compliance
Determine ROW limits within the City,
Prepare and/or review of legal descriptions of parcels for purchases/sales, vacations, zoning, dedications as well as easements
Coordinate and communicate with inter-departmental personnel, outside organizations and general public to coordinate work activities and provide or receive information.
Compute locations to restore lost or destroyed monumentation to the original/correct location
Evaluate personnel and recommended promotions, reassignments, disciplinary actions and terminations as appropriate.

Essential Duties:
Plan, organize and supervise the daily activities of survey crews, assist in the training of assigned personnel; assure the safety of the survey crews; monitor work in progress and time spent on assignments.
Evaluate personnel; recommend promotions, reassignments, disciplinary actions and terminations as appropriate.
Check subdivisions and plats for completeness and accuracy.
Perform complex survey calculations.
Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to surveying and personnel activities.
Calculate positions to restore lost or destroyed monuments to their correct locations.
Contact or communicate with various departments, inspectors, contractors, private surveyors, outside organizations, outside agencies and the general public to coordinate work activities and provide or receive information.
Prepare and maintain maps, files, records and reports related to survey, safety and personnel activities.
Perform research and prepare legal description for boundary surveys and easements.
Perform related duties as assigned.



Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The position requires lifting heavy objects, climbing and digging.

This job includes indoor and outdoor environment subject to adverse weather conditions.
An employee in this position is subject to working in high winds and rain and around potentially hazardous construction sites, heavy traffic, heavy equipment, fumes and noise.

Qualifications:
An equivalent combination to:

A high school diploma supplemented by college-level course work in engineering or mathematics

AND

Seven years of increasingly responsible experience in the area of surveying, including three years of full-time experience as a Survey Chief of Party.

A maximum of two years of college-level education in the area of surveying may be substituted for experience on a year-by-year basis.

Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) is desirable.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Valid Driver's License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.


Knowledge & Skills:
City and Utilities service and project areas, locations and sources of information concerning previous City and private surveys.
Field survey methods, techniques and practices including State requirements for various types of survey.
Advanced math, trigonometry and geometry as related to survey computations.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy when dealing with the public and co-workers.
City organization, operations, policies and objectives.
Oral and written communication skills.
Basic computer skills.
Health safety regulations.
Principals and practices of supervision, discipline and training.
