POSITION PROFILE:

The Northwest Region of the Department of Natural Resources has an opening for a position on the Land Survey field crew. DNR employs five survey crews located in different geographic regions of the state, this position is based out of the Mount Vernon area, and works in DNR managed lands throughout Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish and San Juan counties.

This is a field position, and consists of a variety of tasks related to land boundary surveys conducted on State Trust lands, mostly in forested environments. The work is rewarding and physically demanding, takes place outdoors year-round, in sometimes challenging terrain.

DNR survey crews are outfitted with semi-robotic total station instruments and modern GNSS receivers, our Northwest Region crew gets to spend the majority of its time retracing original GLO surveys in Whatcom, Skagit & Snohomish Counties, searching for original marks left by them in the late 1800s, traversing, posting line, setting monuments, and other tasks commonly associated with Land Surveying in rural forested environments.

The crew works ten hour days, Monday through Thursday. This position is full time and permanent, accrues sick time in addition to vacation leave and receives state holidays. Pursuit of LSIT and/or PLS will be supported and encouraged.


Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
•Four years of experience performing land survey work, including two years as a skilled land survey technician at engineering aide 2 or equivalent level. Two years of college level course work with a major emphasis in surveying may be substituted, year for year, for the required experience.
•Experienced in the use and care of total stations, survey grade gps receivers, data collectors, scientific calculators, hand compass, clinometer, measuring tape, plumb bob, axe, machete, chainsaw and other tools.
•A thorough knowledge of basic trig functions. Able to work with various types of computer programs. Familiarity with various note taking formats. Knowledge of traverse route design, setup and control.
•Knowledge of the public land survey system and general land office survey methods.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
•Experience with boundary retracement and section subdivision. Knowledge of the Public Land Survey System and a natural interest in GLO retracement work and regional history.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
•Able to work for extended hours in poor weather conditions and in various types of terrain carrying heavy and awkward loads; potential overnight travel outside of normal work area and for extended periods.
•Able to sit and/or drive a large pickup truck for up to 2-3 hours morning and/or night for weeks on end.
•Must be able to carry equipment weighing upwards of 45 pounds while walking in a forest environment with steep, rugged terrain and in all kinds of weather, year-round.
•Must be able to work harmoniously and positively with co-workers, at times under less than Ideal conditions.
•Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
•The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
•Must have a valid driver's license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
