The City of Tacoma's Public Works Department is recruiting for the Survey Technician III position.

A Survey Technician III performs technical, semi-professional work as an instrument operator on a survey crew. An employee in this classification is responsible for setting up, adjusting and operating a total station, levels, data collectors, Auto-CAD for survey applications, G.P.S. receivers, multi stations, and other surveying instruments to secure data pertaining to angles and elevations for construction, map making or other purposes.

Staff in the Survey Technician III position provide field survey support for the capital improvement projects of the City's Transportation, Wastewater and Surface Water. (Approximate average annual Capital Improvement budget of $30 million).

Tacoma's Public Works Department provides a unique opportunity for survey technicians to work on a wide variety of complex capital improvement projects as they progress through their careers. Projects can cover the full spectrum of typical municipal infrastructure improvements associated with Transportation, Wastewater and Surface Water and involve partnerships between the City's Public Works and Environmental Services Departments as well as with Tacoma Public Utilities.

Survey Technicians in Public Works work on projects related to the following areas:
Citywide Horizontal and Vertical Control Monumentation Networks
Collection System Projects – Projects that focus on the municipal wastewater and surface water collection system capital improvements and associated roadway.
ADA improvements as well as state of the art green infrastructure (GIS/LID) and innovative surface water management components.
Municipal Transportation Projects - Roads, streets, alleys, bridges and both pedestrian and bicycle trails, not limited to Streets Initiative projects, arterial street improvements, Local Improvement Districts, and Corridor Improvements
This posting will be used to create a Civil Service Eligible list that which will be valid for a period of one year. The Public Works Department will use this list to fill Survey Technician III vacancies during the life of the list.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
This job is in an outdoor environment subject to adverse weather conditions. This position requires standing for long periods of time and walking over uneven ground. The position requires lifting heavy objects, climbing and digging. An employee in this position is subject to working in high winds, rains and around potentially hazardous construction sites, heavy traffic, heavy equipment, fumes and noise.

Qualifications
An equivalent combination to:
Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in trigonometry, geometry and/or engineering

AND

Three (3) years of experience in field survey work, including two (2) years of experience in the operation of survey instruments.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington Driver's License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.

Knowledge & Skills
KNOWLEDGE OF:

City organization, operations, policies and objectives
Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in survey work
Field survey techniques and practices
Intermediate trigonometry and geometry
Proper method of storing equipment, materials and supplies
Applicable laws, codes regulations, policies and procedures
Health safety regulations
Record-keeping techniques including field books
Specialized equipment used in field survey work, including operation of computer software

SKILLS:
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Read and understand field notes, construction plans and hard copies
Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches
Operate a variety of survey instruments and equipment
Follow established procedures in the performance of a variety of survey calculations requiring careful execution
Perform tasks efficiently from oral and written direction
Report to and take direction from the Crew Chief and from Chief Surveyor
Perform manual labor
Operate a variety of tools and equipment including level rod, tapes, plumb bob and engineering chains
Proper lifting techniques
Safely operate a motor vehicle
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
Meet schedules and timelines
Work independently with little direction
Provide technical assistance and work direction to others

Examination Process:
This is a competitive selection process. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their responses to the Supplemental Questions # 15 and 16 reviewed and scored by a committee of subject matter experts, as the Experience and Training Test. It is the responsibility of the applicants to adequately describe all pertinent experience and training. Applicants who pass the test will be placed on an Eligible List for potential interview and hiring consideration.

Per City of Tacoma Personnel Management Policy #170, the City of Tacoma is a drug-free work environment. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment background check, and will include a pre-employment medical exam, physical ability test, and a drug and alcohol screen.

This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between The City of Tacoma and the Local 17 PTE. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
