The City of Tacoma is establishing a Surveyor (Chief of Party) list that will be used to fill vacancies for one year.

This position provides support of Design and Dam Safety Engineers, Construction Inspectors and Internal Customers within the City of Tacoma. We are looking for a highly skilled technician who has knowledge of professional survey practices and procedures, who can plan, organize, oversee, monitor and participate in the daily fieldwork of a survey field crew.

Our ideal candidate will be proficient in the operation and maintenance of electronic survey instrumentation data collection systems and processes, dam safety instrumentation, be able to perform complex survey computations (using various software). The successful candidate will have experience in horizontal and vertical control networks, boundary control, topographical surveys and construction staking as well as the ability to interact professionally with fellow employees, contractors and the public

Key Activities:
Survey independently with Robotic Total Station and GNSS equipment.
Perform scheduled dam safety instrumentation readings at Tacoma Power's seven (7) hydroelectric project sites.
Construction staking to identify design features "on the ground" as well as potential conflicts; boundary surveying.
Data collection of existing topographic features to aid in base map generation (for design by others).
Perform research for survey project, boundary, control and other legal records, including utility as-builts.
Prepare sketches, photos and other media as required.
Work in CAD, Excel, Word and Outlook as required.
Calibrate and maintain surveying equipment (Robotic Total Station, Digital Level, GPS receivers, Data Collectors, Tribachs, Prism Poles Etc…)
Perform general vehicle maintenance (Check fluids, tire pressures, lights, and cleaning).

Essential Duties:
Plan, organize and supervise the field work of a survey crew.
Perform complex survey calculations and plat checks.
Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to surveying and personnel activities.
Restore lost or destroyed monuments to their correct positions.
Assist in the training of assigned personnel; assure the safety of the survey crew; monitor work in progress and time spent on assignments; provide work direction and technical assistance as needed.
Evaluate personnel; recommend promotions, reassignments, disciplinary actions and terminations as appropriate.
Contact or communicate with various internal and external customers and the general public to coordinate work activities and provide or receive information.
Set, adjust and operate dam safety instrumentation, levels, theodolites, total stations, data recorders, data recording units, GPS receivers and other surveying instruments to establish angles and elevations for construction, design, control and property surveying.
Maintain notes, sketches and records of work performed or data secured; develop sketches or hand copies as required.
Clear brush, weeds and other obstacles from line of sight using machetes or chainsaws.
Set traffic cones, signs, and flag traffic to safely redirect traffic.
Perform minor repairs to assigned equipment to maintain in proper working order.
Work safely and cooperatively with coworkers and the public.
Operate a personal computer.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Position requires lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, climbing and digging.
