PURPOSE:
Function as a member of a survey crew that performs technical work involving the various phases of surveying for design, construction, topographic, hydrographic, geospatial control points and as-built surveys.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Collect and provide surveying information for projects. Identify and compute data points from drawings. Identify topographical elements for the collection of data. Review drawings for errors and omissions. Research files to locate existing points and benchmarks. Maintain survey control point records.

Maintain, calibrate and operate a wide variety of surveying field equipment and data collectors. Clean, organize, maintain and calibrate equipment. Utilize correct principles and practices to operate survey instruments such as GPS, base stations, total stations, digital levels, levels and fathometers. Inventory and format memory cards for onboard data collectors. Utilize locators such as magnetometer and cable tracer.

Utilize survey software to perform specialized, technical and mathematical computations and LisCAD survey software to download, upload and process data for technical surveying and mathematical computations. Create data base for survey points in Excel. Verify construction horizontal and vertical location compliance as set forth in specifications.

Research records, drawings and databases and maintain survey project electronic filing system. Identify old projects in the Master Record Document system. Provide data and drawings for contractor claims. Assist in project inspection on unique airfield construction projects. Notify inspector of potential problems. Serve as point of contact for contractor. Conduct “plan review” and survey bid estimates on upcoming major construction projects. Ensure crew has necessary information to perform field work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of surveying procedures and techniques. Extensive knowledge in the operation of survey instruments such as total stations, GPS, digital levels, and level. Knowledge of safety practices applied to surveying. Comprehensive knowledge of the application, use, adjustment and care of survey instruments. In-depth knowledge of construction procedures. Knowledge of information sources to research for needed data. Sound knowledge and judgment necessary in selecting the most appropriate equipment to obtain precise measurements.

Skill to implement safety practices relating to surveying. Skilled in the operation, adjustment and care of survey instruments. Skilled in using LisCAD, GPS and Microsoft Office 2010 in addition to data collectors with survey software. Extensive math and survey skills to provide critical thinking, judgment and experience to define, analyze and resolve problems and issues in a constantly changing, dynamic work environment. Skill to work independently, sometimes as a one person survey crew. Skills to organize and implement project plans.

Ability to apply algebra, geometry and trigonometry for survey computations. Ability to communicate effectively with others under adverse conditions. Ability to read and interpret plans and drawings. Ability to utilize critical thinking, judgment and experience to define, analyze and resolve problems and issues. Interest and ability to explore into the underlying logic and the details of current engineering applications. Ability to work independently. Ability to organize and implement project plans. Proven ability to achieve objectives and performance measures. Ability to provide training and work instruction to the assistant surveyor in field operations. Demonstrated ability to handle the pressure of multiple tasks with constantly changing priorities. Ability to inspect completed and in-process work for accuracy and compliance with standards. Ability to act as Senior Civil Engineering Technician when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Combination of education and experience demonstrative knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:
•High school diploma or GED; and
•Four (4) years related field experience, preferably with a minimum of 1 year of heavy construction experience, education and training directly related to surveying.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
•Two (2) year technical degree in surveying; and/or
•Six (6) years of experience in survey operations and the understanding of procedures and principles of construction and land surveying.
•Knowledge of Leica survey instruments and LisCAD software.
